I am a first-generation child of two immigrants from Amman, Jordan. At a young age my family had moved back and forth between the Middle East and Chicago. I grew up watching my parents make many sacrifices to give my siblings and I the best life they could while facing their own adversities. I couldn't be more thankful for their unconditional love and for showing us that the sky is the limit which is why I’ve decided to create my Senior Thesis based on my childhood memories with the title “Who She Was, Is, and Will be”. Prints in this collection include children’s drawings from my 4 year old cousin Villamina, as well as prints of my mother’s handwriting of the lullabies she sang to me as a child written in Arabic. Fabrics such as Velvet, Corduroy and other tactile fabrics are used to invoke a sense of comfort as well as flattering a range of inclusive sizing. I never want to lose that sense of light and joy that a children’s imagination can invoke. I hope this collection can remind us of that feeling of genuine innocence and happiness as well as serve as a thank you to my family for the sacrifices they made to allow me to become the woman I was, am and want to be.
